TACKLING HAY FEVER

Did you know that hay fever affects 1 in 5 Australians and is one of the most common allergic conditions?

The team at Terrywhite Chemmart Southpoint is on hand to help you better understand and manage your hay fever, and live a clearer, less congested life!

Hay fever is a common term referring to symptoms caused by seasonal exposure to pollen and other irritants. These symptoms are triggered by an allergic reaction. The most common causes of hay fever are pollen, grass, animal hair and dust. These symptoms can include:

  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Itchy face
  • Watery eyes
  • Sinus pressure/headaches

Here are some simple tips to help prevent hay fever in the first place:

  1.  Check the pollen forecast. If the forecast is high, try to stay inside.
  2.  After you’ve been outside for an extended period of time, be sure to change your clothes and have a shower. This will remove any lingering pollen from your body.
  3.  Try to keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible. If possible, avoid drying clothes outside. This will help to stop pollen being brought into your house.
  4.  Avoid exposure to animals.
  5.  Vacuum and wipe surfaces in your home regularly to avoid dust build up. Also try dusting with a damp cloth to contain the particles.
  6.  If you can’t live without flowers in the home, roses, lilies, peonies, hydrangeas and camellias are just a few of the hay fever-friendly options available.
  7.  Grass is one of the most common activators of hay fever and pollen allergies. Avoid grass, particularly at dawn, dusk and night, when the pollen count is at its peak.

When your Hay Fever is acting up, TerryWhite Chemmart  suggests a dual therapy plan combining a corticosteroid nasal spray combined with an antihistamine tablet for high pollen or breakout days.
